Credit Hour Requirements. One unit of credit is defined as an academic designation denoting 40 hours of classroom experience, academic preparation, and research. A typical class is 4 units, and requires 160 hours of work. The faculty has also adopted guidelines for measuring the amount of work that various kinds of assignments may be expected to represent. Fifteen pages of assigned reading (15-20 pages in some classes) represents one hour. One page (250 words) of writing involving research represents 2-3 hours; for non-research writing, 1-2 hours. A one-hour exam represents 5 hours, incuding preparation. The assignments and the time represented by them toward the total time expected are provided in the Expanded Course Description (ECD), available from the class schedule, and in greater detail in the course syllabus, found in the Canvas course shell.
